Australians love a clean home and once a year, usually in Spring, we do a deep clean to keep our living space clean and pathogen-free. If you are new to home ownership, here is our guide to the annual spring clean!
Choose a long weekend
If you live in a two-storey family size home, you will need 2-3 days to complete a deep clean, so find a long weekend, hopefully, a dry one. Sit down with the family and delegate tasks; we recommend working room by room, starting upstairs; the first thing to do is open all the windows, then cover heavy furniture with old sheets and get that long duster out and start at the ceiling and work your way down.
Kitchen cleaning
This room is where you need to expend the most energy; clean under the oven and move that washer dryer combo and vacuum before returning it to its location. You will need cleaning solutions, scourers, buckets and dry cloth and after an hour, the kitchen should be clean. The cooking area is the most difficult to clean; use caustic soda to clean grill and canopy, while using oven cleaner to remove the grease and grime.
Essential cleaning stuff
To do an entire deep clean, you are going to need the following:
- At least one pair of steps for height work.
- Black plastic bin bags.
- Cleaning solutions, bathroom cleaner, window cleaner etc.
- Brushes and a dustpan.
- Decent vacuum cleaner.
- A walk-behind floor sweeper
- Clean dry cloth.
- Old sheets to protect furniture
- Mop and soft brushes.
The other thing you will need is a small skip for all the waste and rubbish and believe us when we tell you there will be a lot of waste.
Room by room strategy
As mentioned earlier, working one room at a time is the best way to spring clean a house; open the windows, put away all ornaments, cover furniture and start dusting the ceiling, working your way to the floor. Leave the room for 15 minutes for dust to settle, then you can start cleaning the windows, with the final job, a deep clean for the carpet. After the clean is complete, fold up and remove the dust sheets, take them outside and give them a good shake.
Hire a skip
The amount of waste you will encounter will no doubt surprise you; old digital devices, foam packaging and stuff that you will never use again. Check the spare room, the attic and the garage and get rid of everything you have no further use for. Search online for a local skip provider and order the skip to be delivered on the day you start the clean.
So, there you have it, a guide to carrying out a spring clean to leave your home smelling fresh free from pathogens. Choose a dry few days and turn your home into a clean zone!
